The list

Latte Art (list #76)

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Have been enjoying plenty of coffee thus far these holidays…giving me good opportunity to work on #76 on the list.

I’m reasonably happy with these two attempts – good enough to cross another one off the list anyway.

Behold:

Best friday night in a long time!

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

Friends of ours from church, Jiun Der and Jenny, took us out last night for what turned out to be a sensational evening.

wharf-restaurantDinner at the wharf restaurant provided outstanding views of the water and bridge, and the food oozed* tasty tasty goodness. Great conversation, and wonderful dessert – chocolate and walnut bavarois with cognac creme. mmm. If you ever want a classy night out in a relaxed and interesting location – this is it.

Afterwards, we saw ‘metamorphosis’ @ sydney theatre based on Kafka’s novella. Very entertaining, amazing sets and topped off with music by Nick Cave. Not sure how much longer it is showing for but I’d heartily recommend it.wharf-pictures2

So a fairly cultured evening, certainly by our usual standards :-) enjoyed with very generous friends – we loved it and felt loved, so thanks J + J.

Incidentally, Sam is blogging about ‘how to love your college student’ this kind of thing gets my vote

*not sure if you are meant to place the word ‘oozed’ next to ‘food’, but it seemed right.

Bondi + Blood

Monday, December 8th, 2008

Simon and Anna have been visiting us from Adelaide for the past couple of days. Was really good to see them again (Anna was one of our bridesmaids).

As part of the tour-de-sydney we took them on the Bondi to Bronte walk. We hadn’t done it before but it confirmed again how beautiful the Eastern coastline is. A few too many posers at Bondi for my liking, but it is an impressive beach and interesting place to look around.

One thing we came across was the blood donation semi-trailer…since none of us had ever given blood before we though we’d give it a go. That and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to mark another one off the list (#32) ! After far too many liters of water and lunch at ‘bondi tucker’ (v. nice despite the name!) we did our time in the chair. The nurse commented on the size of my vein – is that a manly thing to have? big veins? I took it as a compliment.

Mars bar, twisties and biscuits in exchange for superfluous blood? score!

Speed reading, Mission and #4 done

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

It’s a really great book and am glad I read it! This is the set text for Mission Foundations at college. It paints a sweeping picture of God’s saving activity across the stages of salvation history but also gives a good level of detail at each.

The section on intertestamental Jewish missionary endeavour made convincing use of the historical data (they argue that there was not organised, systematic evangelisation by 2nd temple Jews) and the investigation of what each gospel writer contributes individually to a theology of mission was great. For me the gold was the language of inclusion/ingathering. The OT presents Israel as under a general mandate to include (which happens in a few cases – ruth, rahab etc) but with Jesus death and resurrection a new eschatalogical age of ingathering has begun. The key is to realise that this is exactly what Isaiah’s ‘servant’ would do (cf. Is 56 esp v8).

Another bonus, the book has an excellent synthesis/conclusion chapter which gives you the whole book in a few short pages.

So #4 on the list is done!

Dave 3 – Reuben 0

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

#61 on the list was completed in unimpressive style for Adelaide. At least it was fun hanging out with Dave Miers and Rowena! Adelaide FC went down 3-0…

I have to admit that I didn’t know what the team colours were befor the game, but it became pretty clear when I saw the overwhelming sea of Adelaide supporters in their red get-ups:

Thanks for getting me up to the coast Dave, had a great time!! I’ll be back sometime for that pizza place too. very nice… so full of meat and cheesy goodness!

Summer Bay (and 1 crossed off the list!)

Friday, July 18th, 2008

On our recent trip to the central coast we caught a ferry from Ettalong to Palm Beach…home of summer bay surf life saving club (ask someone who watches home and way…)

The ferry trip was great – rode top deck, aft. Palm beach itself was a bit of a let down. I was led to believe that there were going to be more touristy things to do. oh well!

[This was kind of a combo dream fulfillment and crossing off of an item on the list.]
